motherchild.jpg (7915 bytes)To what do you compare Sri Lanka? It's Bali, I said as I wound my way up through the terraced hills of old Ceylon, appearing, after the rain, like faceted emeralds. Arthur C. Clarke, who settled there decades ago after falling in love with its coral reefs told me that Sri Lanka is "India without the hassles." Buddhists make pilgrimages to the country's heritage sites, including a place called the Temple of the Tooth where the Lord Buddha's tooth is said to reside. And where else would you find an important tooth, but in a city named Kandy.

Sri Lanka is, however, rather like the tea it is famous for.  It gets interesting when you splash hot water on it. A civil war in the country's north and east,  where tourists don't go, has flared and smoldered for years.  It has rarely reached tourist areas and tourism has risen quite dramatically lately. The chances of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I would judge, are extremely slim. Sri Lanka is a frequent stop for cruise ships and has long been a popular destination for Europeans.
